Modern Design of Low-Rise Domestic Buildings

Introduction

This course will cover the use of basements as a way of ensuring the better utilisation of land and improving the use of sites with difficult ground conditions. The design and construction of Insulating Concrete Framework will also be examined.

The most recent changes to the Building Regulations will be reviewed as will the changes to BS 5628 Parts 1, 2 & 3. Eurocode 6 will be introduced and innovations in dwelling construction considered.

Professor John Roberts

Eur Ing Professor John Roberts Hon DSc, BSc(Eng), PhD, CEng, FIStructE, FICE, FBMS, FCMI, FRSA, MICT, Hon MIET, is the Principal of the Technical Innovation Consultancy and Emeritus Professor of Civil Engineering at Kingston University. He is a civil engineering graduate of London University, where he also studied for his PhD. Prior to his appointment as Mowlem Professor of Civil Engineering at Kingston University in 1988, Professor Roberts worked for the Cement and Concrete Association (C&CA) and the British Cement Association (BCA). He is co-author of the Concrete Masonry Designer's Handbook, the Handbook to BS:5628:Part 2, Efficient Masonry Housebuilding Design Approach, Efficient Masonry Housebuilding Detailing Approach and the Design Guide for Eurocode 6. Professor Roberts currently chairs or is a member of a number of the committees involved in the development of the European Standards. He is a past president of the International Masonry Society.

Alan Tovey

Alan Tovey CEng, FIStructE, ACIArb, MIFS, is principal of Tecnicom and director of the Basement Information Centre. Widely experienced in industry having worked with the Concrete Section at British Railways Western Region, the C&CA, and the BCA, before setting up his own consultancy in 1993. Extensively experienced in Standards and Codes, he also undertakes expert witness work and technical development activities.

Tim Mealing

Tim Mealing Chartered Architect Dipl Arch Hons RIBA ATP. A registered architect, Tim has worked on a wide range of building types from concept to practical completion, and is currently Manager for Architectural Education at The Concrete Centre. Tim spent 11 years as Director of Building Surveying at the College of Estate Management at Reading University, delivering external degree courses. Recently he was a consultant for SEEDA as Technologies Skills Manager investigating modern methods of construction and identifying new construction approaches to increase efficiency and address the skills shortages which are an issue within the industry.
