What will I study?

Both languages involve the study of the four linguistic skills of listening, speaking, reading and writing, based on the study of the world of work and leisure as well as social issues, such as drugs, alcohol, education, the environment, politics, technological advances, law and order and human interest news items. Part of the oral and the essay offer an element of choice as students can select subject matters of particular interest to them, including literature and cinema, provided these are suitable for development in depth and are related to the country whose language they are studying.

In addition to normal lessons you will have a weekly conversation session with a native speaker which is a fantastic opportunity to practice new words.

Study trips and work experience placements abroad may be arranged to help improve your language skills and knowledge of the countries studied

How is this course assessed?

Both French and Spanish courses follow a modular syllabus, not one single final exam, and there is no coursework. Three modules are taken at the end of the first year and the remaining three at the end of the second year.

What next?

In todays international market it is always beneficial to study a language at some level. This will increase the range of courses and careers open to you. Some university science and business courses include a language option for which an AS/A level language may be useful. You may also be able to study abroad under the ERASMUS / Socrates scheme for part of your university course.
