Course programme

New study programme Expanded Contemporary Dance in 2019-2020
The Urban Contemporary (JMD) and Modern Theater Dance courses will form a new dance study programme from 2019-2020. Go to Expanded Contemporary Dance for more information.

Current UC/JMD students will complete their education in the next four years within the existing curriculum. In June they will perform in an exciting final show. They can also be seen in various performances throughout the school year. Keep an eye on the agenda on this website!

About Modern Theatre Dance (MTD)
During the study students will immerse themselves in various contemporary dance styles along with academic dance at an advanced technical level. This will help our students become a multi-talented dancer who feels at home with modern and contemporary dance ensembles both here and abroad. Their command of a broad, contemporary repertoire and dance vocabulary, such as Emio Greco, Anne Teresa de Keersmaeker, Ohad Naharin, LeineRoebana, Club Guy & Roni, Conny Janssen, plus a personal style of performing makes the MTD-student specially suited to participate in demanding productions.

During the first two years of the study programme, emphasis lies on developing the necessary dance technical skills and building up a dance vocabulary based on classical ballet and contemporary dance, off the floor and from a standing position.

Lessons in improvisation, composition, partner work, contact improvisation, movement research, movement analysis, physical theatre, drama, music, dance history, philosophy, dance health, Alexander technique and contemporary repertoire ensure a deeper and broader development of your skills towards becoming a versatile, accomplished and excellent dancer/dance performer. In addition, the students work with guest choreographers in creating new work.In the past few years students worked with among others Lucinda Childs, Trisha Brown, Maja Delak, Liat Waysbort, Quan Bui Ngoc, Nicole Beutler en Itamar Serussi.

Special collaboration
There is special focus on the repertoire and specific manner of training of ICKamsterdam Emio Greco | PC, Anne Teresa de Keersmaeker and Gaga / Ohad Naharin. The students have the chance to immerse themselves in the work off ICKamsterdam Emio Greco | PC with a workshop Double Skin/Double Mind during a workshop divided over the first three years of the study programme. A bi-weekly intensive workshop “Drumming” by Anne Teresa de Keersmaeker and an extensive workshop aimed at Gaga featuring the repertoire of Ohad Naharin, offers them an opportunity to confront and experience this work as part of the MTD dance curriculum.

The work of Anne Teresa de Keersmaeker has in recent years also been included in the curriculum. The study affords you plenty of opportunity for artistic development, not only in school projects but also through collaboration with the SNDO and during internships.
