About this course

Normally a second-class Honours degree or its equivalent. Students whose first language is not English need to have a minimum of IELTS at 6.5 or TOEFL at 580. The Director of the Centre will also consider applicants with non-standard qualifications.

Course programme

Syllabus

Students will craft a programme of study meeting the degree requirements with the Director of the Centre and their primary supervisor. Teaching staff have exceptional experience in high-level postgraduate teaching and dissertation supervision. The MLitt in Modern Thought offers an ideal combination of freedom and directed study.

First Half-Session

  • Topics of Modern Thought I (20 credit points)
  • Aspects of Modern Thought (20 credit points)
  • Literary Issues (20 credit points)

Second Half-Session

  • Research Proposal and Literature Review (10 credit points)
  • Topics of Modern Thought II (20 credit points)
  • Dissertation Preparation (10 credit points)

Candidates will also select one course of 20 credit points from a designated list of courses.

Candidates may also select a level 5 course from another programme with the permission of the programme co-ordinator and the appropriate Head of Department or Head of School.

Master's Stage

  • Dissertation: Modern Thought (60 credit points)

Assessment

By a combination of coursework and written examinations where appropriate for each course. The degree of MLitt shall not be awarded to a candidate who fails to achieve a CAS mark of 9 or above in EL 5909, irrespective of their performance in other courses.

12 months, full-time.
