Description

    Short course

  • Duration

    1 Day

Many health practitioners know that educating their clients and preparing a health programme is often not enough to motivate them to make changes in their diet and lifestyle.

The only way to help people change is for them to be motivated internally.

This one day course will show you how to use Motivational Interviewing (MI) - one of the most powerful behaviour change methods available today to health professionals.

About this course

Theoretical understanding of motivational interviewing and its principles
Understanding what motivates your clients
A greater insight into some of your own drivers and behaviours
Questions to ask your client, how to hear your client’s story and understand their needs; build rapport; gauge and support their motivation and help them articulate when they are ready to make change
How to use non-verbal communication
How to develop commitment to change in your clients
How to manage setbacks
Additional training options in MI

Nutritional therapists, nutritionists, dietitians and naturopaths who wish to improve client compliance through improved therapeutic relationship
Complementary medicine practitioners (e.g., nutritional therapists, naturopaths, herbalists)
Health care and complementary medicine students who have had hands on clinical experience within their training to date
Please note: This course is linked to ION’s ‘Understanding and Facilitating BehaviourChange in Clinical Practice’ course which provides an overview of key behavior change models. This course goes into detail on MI specifically. Attendance on the Behaviour Change course is not a prerequisite for this course. There is only a very small amount of duplication between two days.
