Course programme

Year 1

This programme involves the study of both the theory and practical aspects of the following: diagnosis and rectification of engine and component faults, chassis system faults, auxiliary equipment electrical faults. As much work as possible is done practically but this apprenticeship will require academic learning as well.
Knowledge and understanding:
The fundamentals of vehicle technologies e.g. vehicle systems such as chassis, engine, transmission, electrical, air conditioning, high voltage vehicles, etc.
The types, and associated characteristics, of light vehicles e.g. front- or rear-wheel drive, four-wheel drive, etc.
Diagnostic principles and logical problem-solving techniques.
Emerging automotive technologies and the impact they will have on the knowledge and skills technicians will require in the future.

Year 2

Carry out the foundation tasks common to all procedures e.g. removing and replacing bolts, screws and clips, replacing seals, extracting damaged fasteners, cutting, drilling, filing, using fabrication skills etc.
Contribute to the maintenance of a safe and efficient workshop and adhere to the dealership/garage’s business processes (e.g. environmental awareness, servicing a vehicle, record keeping, customer contact) and standard workshop operations. Access specific information e.g. vehicle repair information, wiring diagrams, maintenance tables, technical production information and apply appropriately.
Use diagnostic, mechanical and electrical measuring equipment.
Inspect and prepare a vehicle to the required quality standard for handover to the customer
e.g. following a service, complex repair, pre-delivery inspection etc.
Service and maintain a vehicle without supervision.
Remove repair/replace components in line with manufacturer’s standards.
Investigate symptoms of vehicle fault(s) and identify the likely underlying causes.
Apply advanced diagnostic principles and logical problem-solving techniques, supported by
diagnostic tools and testing regimes, to establish electrical, mechanical and electronic
faults.
Use current flow diagrams and electrical test equipment to carry out standard diagnostic
and repair procedures.

Additional information

EPA is the final stage that an apprentice goes through to complete their apprenticeship. The apprentice must show their learning to an independent end-point assessor and the overall grade available is distinction, pass or fail. EPA organisations have to maintain a large enough bank of items (for the online knowledge test) and activities (for the synoptic practical assessment) to prevent the assessment from being predictable. Assessment events are: 3 Logbook The independent assessor will review the apprentice’s logbook and their online behaviour assessment in advance of the professional discussion. Grade weighting: 25% Synoptic knowledge test There will be two seperate tests of knowledge and understanding (one of one-hour and one of 1.5 hours). These tests cover the learnings from all modules. Grade weighting: 25% The on-programme knowledge tests at the end of stage 2 account for 15%. Synoptic skills test A two-day practical exam to test the apprentice’s skills will include a number of tasks covering the breadth of the standard. There will also be a 30-minute professional discussion, covering one of the four tasks from module 7. Grade weighting: 35%
