The Level 2 Diploma course has been designed to give students an understanding of the electrical and mechanical systems that are used on a motor vehicle in terms of operation, design and maintenance.
The course has been designed to give the learner an insight into the motor industry by completing a number of set tasks, along with multi-choice examinations to test knowledge.
During workshop sessions diagnostic equipment is included into the assessment process. Embedded into the programme are essential skills that will develop the students’ numeracy, communication and IT skills to build confidence both in the classroom and workshop.
A number of supplementary tasks are also included which enhance the students’ learning. These qualifications were developed in collaboration with the Institute of the Motor Industry (IMI), the Sector Skills Council for the Automotive Retail Industry.

Knowledge of Health, Safety & Good Housekeeping in the Automotive Environment
Knowledge of Support for Job Roles in the Automotive Work Environment
Knowledge of Materials, Fabrication, Tools & Measuring Devices used in the Automotive Environment.
Introduction to Vehicle Technology and Workshop Methods and Processes
Carry-out Basic Motor Vehicle Maintenance
Knowledge and Inspection of Light Vehicle Wheels and Tyres
Knowledge of Light Vehicle Engine Mechanical, Lubricant & Cooling System Units & Components
Knowledge of Light Vehicle Fuel, Ignition, Air & Exhaust Systems Units & Components
Knowledge of Removing & Replacing Light Vehicle Electrical Units & Components
Knowledge of Removing & Replacing Light Vehicle Chassis Units & Components
Knowledge of Routine Light Vehicle Maintenance
Knowledge of Light Vehicle Transmission & Driveline Units and Components
Additional studies:
Bench and Sheet Metal Work Skills

About this course
Successful learners may have the opportunity to further their studies and progress onto the Level 3 VRQ 4290 programme, Level 2 Foundation Modern Apprenticeship or the Level 3 BTEC Diploma Vehicle Technology (with sufficient maths skills.)
Alternatively, with the addition of the required mathematics, learners have the opportunity to progress onto the Level 3 BTEC Diploma in Vehicle Technology to accrue UCAS additional points to allow progression to higher education or university.
Appropriate GCSEs at grade D or above required to undertake this course and a formal interview is also essential to review experiences.

Course programme
The course is delivered through practical demonstrations which are supported with realistic working tasks, where the emphasis is on you demonstrating the required skills. Underpinning knowledge for each unit is given via classroom based mode of delivery, where you are encouraged to participate in a range of learner centered activities.
Learners are assessed in a variety of ways including practical activities, multi-choice online examinations and participation in portfolio and assignment work.
