About this course

Standard entry to this course requires one reference. It is desirable that you can demonstrate 90% attendance at your last place of study or work. A GCSE in English, maths, science and one other subject at grade 4 (C) or above is required. A level 2 Diploma in Light Vehicle maintenance is essential along with a positive attitude towards learning in the automotive industry.



Consideration will be given to all applicants over the age of 19, who do not hold formal English and maths qualifications.

Course programme

Year 1

The level 3 Diploma is a vocational subject-based learning programme covering all elements both the theory and practical aspects of the following: light vehicle diagnostic and rectification principles of engines, tyres, brakes, steering, suspension, transmission and electrical systems. Personal and social development and employment skills are compulsory elements of the course. Students are required to find and carry out suitable work experience over the course of the year in order to pass the programme. The programme has been designed to improve your understanding of these different light vehicle systems and to further develop knowledge and skills in advance diagnostic and rectification procedures on all major systems and the compulsory health and safety, tools and equipment and job roles in the automotive industry. The course has a practical focus with emphasis on gaining the skills and understanding of tasks on light vehicles, giving you confidence in procedures to an advanced level and full understanding of the related theory, with opportunities to practice skills and techniques learnt in our fully equipped light vehicle workshop. There is online learning via the colleges Moodle site, where lectures, handouts, the course schedule and other student resources can be found and utilised by all students.

The course is designed to give the students hands-on practical experience on carry out diagnostic and rectification procedures on light vehicles and so is delivered and assessed practically in the most part with an element of written assessments to ensure systems theory is understood, coupled with online exams, to ensure industry standards are met. Your tutor will provide explanations, demonstrations and guide you through practical activities. Practical assessments are based on observations of practical activities, written assessments are based on completion of written assessments. On completion of the course, you will earn a full IMI Level 3 Diploma. You will be assessed through the use of practical, theory and online assessments that will be witnessed and signed off by our specialists. You will complete a portfolio of evidence covering workshop tasks and related online exams and phase tests for each topic you study. Those students who are 16-18 will be expected to continue to work towards GCSE grade C or above in both English and maths, if they have not already gained them.
