Course programme

Year 1

The initial focus will be on the development of your underpinning knowledge, the competence to complete foundation tasks effectively and the behaviours required, enabling you to operate effectively under supervision. With the foundations in place, the next step will be to develop the competence to carry out servicing, repair and diagnostic procedures. Leicester College will carry out the training and assessment activities and will ensure that you are supported in your learning, emotional and social development. Your progress will be tracked and monitored throughout the apprenticeship using an e-portfolio system.

Year 2

You will be provided with the knowledge and understanding of the fundamentals of vehicle technologies e.g. vehicle systems such as chassis, engine, transmission, electrical, air conditioning, high voltage vehicles, etc. The types, and associated characteristics, of light vehicles e.g. front- or rear-wheel drive, four-wheel drive. Diagnostic principles and logical problem-solving techniques. Emerging automotive technologies and the impact they will have on the knowledge and skills technicians will require in the future.

Through practical skills, you will cover the competency to achieve the following in the workplace. Carry out the foundation tasks common to all procedures e.g. removing and replacing bolts; screws and clips; replacing seals; extracting damaged fasteners; cutting; drilling; filing and using fabrication skills. Contribute to the maintenance of a safe and efficient workshop and adhere to the dealership/garage’s business processes (e.g. environmental awareness; servicing a vehicle; record keeping; customer contact) and standard workshop operations. Access specific information e.g. vehicle repair information, wiring diagrams, maintenance tables, technical product information and apply appropriately. Use diagnostic, mechanical and electrical measuring equipment. Inspect and prepare a vehicle to the required quality standard for handover to the customer e.g. following a service, complex repair, pre-delivery inspection. Service and maintain a vehicle without supervision. Remove repair/replace components in line with manufacturer’s standards. Investigate symptoms of vehicle fault(s) and identify the likely underlying causes. Apply advanced diagnostic principles and logical problem-solving techniques, supported by diagnostic tools and testing regimes, to establish electrical, mechanical and electronic faults. Use current flow diagrams and electrical test equipment to carry out standard diagnostic and repair procedures.

Before the Standard is met, you must hold a qualification that meets the EU’s 2014 F-gas regulation and this will be carried out during your training.

Additional information

The assessment approach has two components. A rigorous synoptic end test and a light-touch robust on-programme assessment process that together provide assured outcomes for the sector. The programme will conclude with an independent synoptic assessment. This begins with the employer and training provider confirming that you are fully competent and ready to enter this final phase. This is followed by the synoptic assessment, of which there are four components. 1. Log book The assessment organisation will review the final year of your logbook in order to assess the progress you have made over time, particularly with regard to the way the development of your soft skills and behaviours have progressed. Leicester College and the employer will be required to maintain an electronic version of the log book in order that it can be reviewed remotely 2. Behaviour Assessment They will conduct an independent behaviour assessment, taking input from your immediate work colleagues. This will be the final peer review, completing a sequence that started at the point you joined the programme. It will provide evidence of the quality of your soft skills and the degree to which your behaviours meet the requirements of the workplace. There are three levels, fail, pass and distinction. The review of the logbook will be used to validate the accuracy of the assessment test. The final mark will be based on a combination of logbook and behaviour assessment 3. Knowledge Test There will be an in-depth, online test that will use a range of question types to explore both the knowledge and understanding of you. The question types will be designed to test the ability you to apply your knowledge to real-world problems. 4. Skills Test . The fourth element is a two-day practical examination of your skills and your understanding of the underpinning theory
