Programme Design
This programme was started in 1998 and was the first motorsport engineering degree course in the world. Swansea Metropolitan University (then Swansea Institute) was awarded the Service Industry award by the Motorsport Industry Association in 1999 for leading this educational initiative in motorsport education.
The historical background to our expertise in this field dated back to 1996 when one of our two Team Darrian GT 3s won what was to become the British GT Championship. Since then, numerous competitive activities have been undertaken by Swansea Metropolitan University-backed teams and individual students. These have included the Locost championship and the UK Formula Student competition. Project cars are built and developed throughout the academic year.
Graduates of the programme have found employment throughout the motorsport industry including Prodrive, Triple Eight Race Engineering and Pi Research, along with Honda F1, BMW F1, Red Bull F1 and Mitsubishi Raliart motorsport teams.
