The Moving & Handling Clients Safely Level 2 Course is concerned with the movement and handling of individuals to maximise their physical comfort. Although it is primarily concerned with moving and handling people, the health and safety principles described should be applied to all loads.

The course includes the following units:

Unit 1: Preparing Clients and Environments for Moving and Handling

The following topics are covered: Legislation and local/organisational policies concerned with moving and handling; Prepare the environment, aids and equipment for moving and handling; Why it is important to prepare yourself for moving and handling; Prepare yourself prior to moving and handling individuals and objects; Why it is important to prepare the client for moving and handling; Appropriate clothing and footwear for care workers; Methods used to assess risk; and Moving and handling methods.

Unit 2: Using Manual Techniques to Assist Clients to Move from One Position to Another

The following topics are covered: Support to clients during the process of moving and handling; Importance of supporting clients during the process of moving and handling; Why it is important to maintain the privacy and dignity of clients; Safe moving and handling techniques; Problems encountered during moving and handling clients and how to overcome these; Recognise unsafe moving and handling methods; and Why it is important to offer explanations and move and handle individuals with the same care.

Unit 3: Using Equipment to Assist Clients to Move from One Position to Another

The following topics are covered: Different types of equipment, used to assist clients to move from one place to another; Appropriate aids and equipment; Prepare to use equipment; Safe moving and handling techniques using equipment; Report equipment faults; Procedures for cleaning equipment and returning it to storage after use.

Unit 4: Reducing the Adverse Effects of Pressure

The following topics are covered: Consequences to the individual of adverse pressure; The causes of damage to the skin and underlying tissues (pressure sores); Effects of pressure sores on the client; Importance of preventing pressure sores; Risk factors associated with pressure sore development; Risk Assessment documentation and assess risks; How pressure sores develop and how they are graded; Use of the aid and equipment available to reduce the risk of pressure sore development; Make practical interventions – including positional changes and maintaining mobility – consistent with the plan of care; Educate and inform clients and their carers about the causes and prevention of pressure sores; and Identify and deal with potential / actual problems
