On this master’s degree you will learn to understand accounting and financial information, analyse problems and participate in management decision making.

In this intensive programme we cover financial accounting, management accounting and international finance. A Research Project allows you to develop a deeper knowledge in an area of interest.

You will develop the all-round capabilities needed to be a successful accounting or finance professional. These include research and analytical skills as well as team-working, problem solving and communication.

About this course

A minimum of a second class honours degree (2:2) in any academic discipline, or equivalent overseas degree from a recognised institution or equivalent professional or other qualification.

Applicants who possess a diploma rather than a good degree may be eligible for entry provided they have compensatory work experience and can demonstrate career development.

If English is not your first language you will need to have the following level of English language competency:

Course programme

The MSc Accounting and Finance is made up of four compulsory taught modules, one or two elective modules and a research project. You can view the course structure here.

Compulsory modules are as follows:

Skills and Techniques for Accounting and Finance: You will learn the essential skills you require to study accounting and finance. You learn mathematics, statistics and book keeping skills, providing the foundation for the rest of the programme.

Managerial Accounting: You will develop a detailed understanding of management accounting and its relevance for decision making in a variety of organisations. You will learn techniques for planning, controlling and analysing organisational performance. You will develop your technical ability and the ability to critically evaluate the techniques and processes.

Financial Accounting: On this module you will gain an understanding of financial accounting techniques, from basic transaction records to international financial reporting. You will learn how to prepare and interpret financial statements and debate current issues in international financial accounting.

Corporate Finance Concepts: You will consider how accounting and corporate finance issues are related. You will study the fundamental ideas and theories of corporate finance and how accounting practice links with corporate financial decisions.

Financial Markets and Institutions: You will be taught about the way markets and institutions link the users and providers of funds within financial systems. You will focus on asset pricing and market efficiency issues. You will study the effects that globalisation, technical innovation and regulatory change have on institutions.

Finance and Accounting Research Project: On this module you incorporate research methods and a research project. This is a key component of the master's degree. The project provides you with an opportunity to explore a specialist area in depth. You have a choice to undertake a traditional dissertation or follow a structured research project which incorporates both theoretical and applied research. You will be provided with guidance and advice throughout the process.
