MSc Biomedical Science

A thorough understanding of the basic biological science concepts that underpin health and disease, and how these concepts are investigated in the laboratory to inform the diagnosis and treatment of patients.
Advanced knowledge in your choice of specialist pathology disciplines including immunology, biochemistry, haematology, microbiology and cellular pathology.
The skills and experience necessary to undertake an independent research project in an area relevant to biomedical research or practice, and to report your findings in a scientific style.
The ability to critically evaluate recent advances in biomedical research and practice through independent study of relevant research literature.
Initiative and problem-solving ability in biomedical science via problem-based exploration of clinical case studies.

The full-time MSc Biomedical Science route is attractive if you are seeking an academic research career and/or wish to make yourself highly employable in a research laboratory, University Laboratory or in the pharmaceutical industry. You may also wish to continue with a research career, and study towards a PhD.

The part-time route (also available as specialist routes in Medical Microbiology, Clinical Biochemistry, Cellular Pathology or Haematology) is designed for students in full-time employment in biomedical laboratories who are allowed day-release by their employers to improve their professional knowledge.

You should have a minimum 2:2 honours degree or equivalent, although substantial professional experience may be acceptable when combined with another qualification. We look for graduates with an appropriate honours degree in biomedical subjects, or biological subjects with an appropriate biomedical content.

English Language requirements are IELTS 6.5 with a minimum of 6.0 in each area (unless otherwise stated) or equivalent accepted qualification

Regardless of the route you choose you will be given the opportunity to learn via problem-based learning in Principles of Integrated Biomedical Science and will undertake a research project in our state-of-the-art laboratories or within the workplace. Core modules also include Molecular Genetics and Genomics, Clinical Immunology, and Research Methods. Students on the generic route can then choose from a range of specialist modules in Clinical Biochemistry, Cellular Pathology, Advanced Haematology, and Medical Microbiology, while students on specialist routes take the same core modules along with the appropriate specialist module and an extended literature review in their field.
