Our MSc Diabetes Best Practice degree is designed to equip workforces and individuals with the skills and knowledge to meet future diabetes healthcare demands in the UK and internationally. Typical course content

Our part-time or full-time modular programme provides the flexibility to cater for a diverse range of students and organisations, enabling study to be undertaken alongside other commitments.

Each of our modules involves discussion of key issues; practice in applying concepts, both orally and in writing, including analysis and interpretation of material; and feedback on work produced.

Teaching dates for 2017-18 are:

Core modules

Our core modules are the Foundations of Diabetes, Clinical Research Skills and a 6,000 word Dissertation.

The Foundations of Diabetes module gives a comprehensive overview of the mechanisms and management of diabetes. It provides basic sciences and clinical knowledge, and underpins the study skills required for the rest of your postgraduate studies.

All students will receive training in research skills and statistics in preparation of their dissertation, in the form of our core module, Clinical Research Skills.

The Dissertation module is undertaken for the MSc and can be by research or via a professional project.

Optional modules

We also offer a wide range of optional modules for students and organisations to tailor the course to their needs.

Our optional modules include:

  • Diabetes in the Young
  • Psychosocial Aspects of Diabetes Through the Ages
  • Assessment of Nutritional Status
  • MODNAP (Modern Management of Diabetes, Nutrition and Pharmacology)
  • Management of Diabetes in Primary and Secondary Care (adult module)
  • Work-based Learning in Diabetes
  • Teaching the Teachers to Teach

These optional modules provide an opportunity to gain important skills for meeting Diabetes UK Diabetes Best Practice Tariff and other professional guidelines.

In addition to the diabetes modules offered on this programme, students are also able to take a module worth up to 10 ECTS from across the University. Options include modules such as:

  • Leadership in the NHS
  • Prescribing Skills
  • Developing Public Health Practice and Demographic Change, Ageing and Globalisation
  • Public Health, Law and Ethics

Students taking the full MSc are required to take the three core modules and four optional modules.
