The MSc Emergency Practitioner is an innovative and exciting course that aims to develop the professional and clinical knowledge and skills important to the Emergency practitioner. The course will support you in developing your ability to find and critically evaluate the evidence base for interventions in practice and identify the implications for your practice. It is designed to enable and empower you to safely and effectively fulfil this dynamic role in practice, facilitating the links between specialist theory and practice and enhancing your critical thinking and decision-making skills.

About this course
Year 1 PG Certificate Emergency Practitioner will comprise the specialist content of the programme related to Emergency Practitioner care. The course will develop your applied knowledge and understanding of a range of topics relevant to Minor Illness and Minor Injuries theory and practice. You will demonstrate your ability to provide safe practice through the achievement of practice related outcomes and from your ability to articulate the rationale for actions in the clinical setting. You will undertake two theory modules (20 credits each) alongside two practice modules (10 credits each).
Year 2 PG Diploma Emergency Practitioner will allow you to build upon your studies in Emergency Practitioner care and further develop your clinical role in relation to research and workforce development areas. You will select either the Prescribing Studies or Option Modules reflecting your interest and Emergency Practitioner setting. The course continues to offer you opportunities for inter-professional learning with a mix of healthcare professionals undertaking the programme.
Year 3 Dissertation will enable you to evaluate critically, current research and advanced scholarship in healthcare practice and to develop understanding and new skills to a higher level. You will undertake a 15,000 word research dissertation/project from a choice of 3 options:
1. Primary Research
2. Secondary Research (Integrative Review)
3. Evidence Based Practice Project
During the Master’s Degree course you will demonstrate originality in the application of knowledge, together with a practical understanding of how established techniques of research and enquiry are used to create and interpret knowledge in healthcare practice. At every stage of the MSc Emergency Practitioner you will be encouraged to personalise your learning and apply theory to practice

The module starts by examining the general principles of clinical examination within the context of minor illness before specifically addressing particular minor illnesses relating to the respiratory, ENT, abdominal, genito-urinary and MSK systems. The module also provides you with the opportunity to learn the appropriate way to request and interpret investigations and to appreciate their relevance to enhancing the clinical examination process.

The aim of the module is two fold: Firstly, to equip healthcare professionals to become critical consumers of research as practitioners by providing them with knowledge and understanding necessary to understand the impact of research through the ability to evaluate research appropriately; and secondly to provide the opportunity to undertake an in depth literature review to investigate a research question of their choice. The module provides an introduction to different types of literature review, systematic reviews, integrative reviews and scoping reviews. The module provides an introduction to a range of qualitative and quantitative research methods and outlines the different epistemological and ideological foundations of contrasting research paradigms. The module includes exposure to the techniques involved in analysing both qualitative and quantitative data, as well as considering ethical issues relating to research.
