Designed as both a thorough introduction and update in the fields of gastroenterology, hepatology and nutrition, this programme is aimed at clinicians wishing to gain strong knowledge of the sciences underpinning clinical diseases and their management. It offers a focus on the relevant basic sciences and research techniques.
This programme, based in the Centre for Immunobiology, will:
Cover the complete curriculum in gastroenterology, hepatology and nutrition if you are a new entrant into these fields, and act as an update and extension if you are already working in it.
Offer you the flexibility of distance learning.
Offer opportunities to stay in the Centre as clinical research fellow, if your aim is further study.
You can also choose to study this MSc full-time for one year at our London campus.
Why study your MSc in Gastroenterology at Queen Mary?
Barts and the London School of Medicine and Dentistry is comprised of two world renowned teaching hospitals, St Bartholomew’s and The Royal London, which have made, and continue to make, an outstanding contribution to modern medicine. We were one of the top five in the UK for medicine in the 2008 Research Assessment Exercise.
The Centre for Immunobiology is one of the largest academic and clinical departments in this field in the UK and includes professors in GI genetics, paediatrics, surgery, neurogastroenterology, clinical gastroenterology, GI pharmacology and GI physiology all of whom contribute to the postgraduate teaching. The vast majority of the teaching in the course is provided by clinical academics who are both research and clinically active. The course has been approved by the British Society of Gastroenterology Education Committee..
Started in 2010, the programme has been established as a distance learning course with the support of the United European Gastroenterology Federation (UEGF)

Course programme

Structure

The Masters runs from October until April of the second year. To gain the MSc you also take a research project that runs from April until August in your second and final year.

Distance learning

This programme is available to study by distance learning, delivered online via ‘QMplus’. This is an easy-to-use online virtual learning environment.

You will be able to follow each lecture online via audio recordings and slide/whiteboard content. All written assignments are submitted through the online system and poster and oral presentations assessed through SKYPE/webcam system. You are encouraged to interact with teaching staff and other students in online discussion forums, join group activities and be part of the student community.
