The MSc Integrative Counselling and Psychotherapy provides professional training in counselling and psychotherapeutic skills necessary to take on the professional role of a counsellor or psychotherapist.

The programme is working toward accreditation with the British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy (BACP) and has been developed in alignment with the requirements of BACP. Graduates will be well-equipped with the necessary skills and knowledge to apply for the BACP Certificate of proficiency leading to professional registration as a counsellor or psychotherapist.

About this course

During the programme you will be welcomed into our postgraduate community, working closely your fellow students and our team of psychological therapists and trainers. 

An integrated assessment strategy has been adopted for this course. This incorporates a diverse range of scaffolding learning activities, enhancing inclusivity and diversity of learning, mapping PSRB guidance and requirements.

You will be provided with regular opportunities throughout the course to demonstrate your self-awareness, benefiting from a regular process of self-exploration, self-examination and reflection in a secure and confidential setting to develop an understanding of yourself.

You may develop your critical evaluation thinking and learn to evaluate evidence in the pursuit of ethical decision making in line with the BACP ethical framework of practice.

A series of video-based skills activities and feedback-giving tasks (formal and informal) will build your skills in line with BACP learning outcomes throughout the course.

In line with BACP requirements for accredited courses, you will be required to engage with at least 400 hours of direct teaching time.

You will also be required to:

attend one intensive week of teaching and group-based activities to develop a meaningful learning environment governed by principles of reflective engagement. This will take place at the beginning of the course
attend (or actively participate in) the Student Annual Research Conference (hosted on annual basis within the psychology department)
complete “Applications of therapy online”, a bootcamp course of 18 hours delivered by the course team at the end of semester 2.

The course incorporates a thorough research-based curriculum through which you will be prepared to carry out your own research exploring contemporary issues in counselling and psychotherapy and enhance your knowledge and expertise in your own area of interest.

It provides a safe environment where basic counselling processes, skills, theoretical concepts and research evidence could be discussed and put into practice within group activities and peer role-plays

In this module, students are able to gain a considerable portfolio of knowledge and skills to support them in interpreting published research in both psychology and allied fields, and in conducting their own psychological research. Students are encouraged to gain a critical understanding of the various epistemological positions taken by psychological researchers, and study the research methods concomitant with these philosophical assumptions. Students learn advanced literature searching and, through synthesis of published research, how to identify knowledge gaps and research questions. As the module proceeds, students have practice at developing such a research idea into a feasible and ethically sound research protocol. Both quantitative and qualitative data collection and analysis techniques are covered, the former to an advanced level. Students learn how to select, administer, and score psychometric instruments. Whilst psychometrics are taught in the research setting, their applied use is also discussed. This will include the historical development of psychometric theory. Students will be required to demonstrate competence in the administration and interpretation of tests of cognitive ability and providing verbal and written feedback. Students will also be introduced to procedures of test construction and test validation, and will be required to demonstrate an understanding of validation methodology. At the end, students will study research methodology relating to their specific courses; Counselling Psychology, Cyberpsychology, Forensic Psychology and Occupational Psychology, in order to prepare then further for the independent research project.

The research Project is an independent study module in which students will negotiate, plan, manage and execute a programme of research and analysis. In addition, students will develop skills in critical thinking, report writing and will have the opportunity to present their work in progress at the end of year research conference.


Our course team are accredited by, or members of, professional bodies, including: Advance HE which assures the high quality of teaching in higher education: the British Associations for Counselling and Psychotherapy; British Psychological Society as Chartered Psychologists; and the Health and Care Professions Council, the government regulator for applied psychologists.

You will also learn from experienced practitioners in forensic and clinical psychology, as well as published experts in the fields of cyber-psychology, health, occupational, and cognitive psychology.

Upon completion of this course you will have developed:

  • a systematic understanding of knowledge, and a critical awareness of current problems and new insights in the field of counselling and psychotherapy
  • in-depth knowledge of the BACP Ethical Framework, as well as a critical understanding of its applications in resolving associated ethics dilemmas in practice
  • a comprehensive understanding of therapeutic interventions and research-based knowledge, at basic and advanced levels, applicable to the field counselling and psychotherapy
  • originality in the application of theoretical knowledge, together with a practical understanding of how established interventions are applied in an ethically viable way within professional contexts
  • a solid conceptual and theoretical understanding of key research methods leading to an ability to critically evaluate current research and advanced scholarship, appraise methodologies and develop, where appropriate, new hypotheses informed by the latest development in the field of counselling and psychotherapy.

Graduates from our training course will be equipped to practise as competent counselling and psychotherapy practitioners in various sectors within mental health care, able to:

  • assess, evaluate and address complex issues both systematically and creatively, make sound judgements, implement formulated therapeutic plans and communicate their conclusions clearly to specialist and non-specialist audiences
  • demonstrate self-direction and originality in the provision of counselling and psychotherapy services in the mental health sector while acting autonomously in advancing their knowledge, insight and skills basis at personal and professional levels.

You will also be able to demonstrate a broad range of transferable skills, such as:

Postgraduate Loan (Home Fee Status):

Financial Hardship:

Students can apply to the Dennis Turner Opportunity Fund for help with course related costs however this cannot be used for fees or to cover general living costs.
