The MSc International Hospitality and Events programme will provide students with an opportunity to develop their management knowledge and skills while strengthening their critical awareness of the current socio-economic, marketing and political challenges currently affecting the profession. Academic Requirements

Applicants should normally have:

A good honours degree in business, management, hospitality, events, tourism, geography and other social sciences awarded by a UK university, or
An equivalent qualification accepted by the University, or
A professional qualification deemed to be of an equivalent standard.
Applicants with a degree in a different field may be considered, provided that they can demonstrate extensive professional experience in the area of travel and tourism, hospitality, attractions or events management.

Course programme

Programme Content

The programme can be studied full time (over one year) or part-time (over two years). The university academic calendar consists of two (2) terms a year. New students are admitted to the programme in the autumn term which starts in September each year.

A wide range of teaching and learning approaches are used to build up your skills and knowledge – mainly through lectures, seminars and practical activities. Teaching and learning will also be informed by lecturers’ current research and industry engagement.

You will take part in case study based discussions, field trips and in-class activities. You will supplement all of this with your own guided and independent reading and research. The mix of delivery modes will be varied and suitable to the content being delivered.

Module and programme information may be subject to change. Not all modules listed will be available in any one year. Module availability is dependent on staffing and the number of students wishing to take each module.

    • International Tourism in the 21st Century (30 Credits) - Compulsory This core module provides a comprehensive overview and critical analysis of tourism. This module identifies a range of environmental, social, cultural and economic issues that arise out of mass tourism development in different parts of the world. In order to identify the causes as well as to examine possible solutions, the module critically examines the socio-political environment in which mass tourism is situated namely neo-liberal globalisation.
    • Managing Contemporary Hospitality (30 Credits) - Compulsory

      This module aims to develop a critical understanding of contemporary trends within the international hospitality environment whilst providing students with the knowledge and skills to critically evaluate the impacts of these trends on hospitality businesses and operations.

    • Events Management (15 Credits) - Compulsory The aim of this module is to develop a critical understanding of the events management field and to equip students with the knowledge and skills to be able to a) effectively assess events’ impacts and legacy, b) analyse the role of business, conference, cultural/heritage, sporting, religious and other festivals and events in the development and revitalisation of destinations at local, regional and national levels, c) compare and contrast the motivations and roles of the various stakeholders of events along with the motivations of participants drawing on theoretical frameworks.
    • Hospitality and Events Practicum (15 Credits) - Compulsory The aim of this module is to provide students with practical experience in the contemporary hospitality and events industry. This will normally take the form of a work placement at an agreed location, however it can also take the form of practical work related activities such as researching an agreed work location. Students will normally be engaged on one or more specific practical projects agreed between the organisation and the University and drawing upon the skills and resources of the student.
    • Research Methods & Dissertation (60 Credits) - Compulsory This module aims to assist students to develop an understanding of the research process and to conduct research leading to successful completion of their dissertation. It enables students to demonstrate proficiency in relation to scoping the issue/problems, consideration of appropriate literature, collection and analysis of data and developing specific recommendations or conclusions in relation to the research project.
    • Destination Management (15 Credits) - Optional The aim of this module is to equip students with the knowledge and skills in order to apply appropriate operational and strategic destination management and marketing solutions. The first part of the module draws on destination management theory; students will critically evaluate the challenges and opportunities destinations face. Utilising case studies students will also evaluate the range of stakeholders involved in destination management in various destinations. The second part of the module focuses on the nature and role of destination management organisations (DMOs) in different contexts, destination competitiveness, how destination managers create value to differentiate themselves and gain a superior position in a competitive market.
    • Tourism and Development (15 Credits) - Optional This module aims to equip students with a critical understanding of the complex, contested, multi-dimensional nature of the opportunities provided by the tourism industry to drive positive change in developing countries. The module adopts a strong focus on the evolving nature of stakeholder relations, policy narratives and conceptual understanding of key issues with respect to the tourism – development nexus. In addition, it draws on practice-based insight in order to deliver a balanced, holistic understanding of the role and impact of tourism across key areas of the developing world.
    • Entrepreneurship in Tourism (15 Credits) - Optional The aim of this module is to provide students with knowledge and skills that support the development and critical evaluation of entrepreneurship in tourism. Various theoretical frameworks will be introduced to enable students to appreciate the value of tourism enterprise and the complexities of exploiting entrepreneurial opportunities offered by the tourism industry. The module will develop students’ understanding of the resource needs for tourism venture start-ups, underlying processes of entrepreneurial activity and the outcomes of tourism enterprise. Students will also be able to identify key issues affecting tourism entrepreneurship and tools for effective management of tourism businesses.
    • Digital Marketing (15 Credits) - Optional The aim of this module is to develop students’ knowledge and skills for understanding the complexity of the new digital landscape. The module provides a critical context in which to analyse the current digital developments. In particular, the module will facilitate students’ learning of e-marketing models, social media and e-tailing in order to produce a coherent digital marketing strategy.
    • Open Module (15 Credits) - Optional

      Students can choose another 15 credit module from postgraduate programmes in the Business School.
