Course description
This course enables you to gain the skills and knowledge required by quality professionals who need to understand and manage quality from a strategic business perspective. It develops a distinctive blend of technical and business skills enabling you to become a quality management practitioner operating effectively in the industry, commerce and public sector.
The course is for
• business and management graduates who are looking to increase their knowledge and skills prior to starting a career in quality management
• business professionals with a solid understanding of core business and management concepts wanting to deepen their knowledge and skills in quality management

You learn how to use processes and techniques that deliver better organisational systems, prioritise innovation and ensure customer-focused outcomes. These result in more robust, sustainable and cost effective organisations. You can apply these skills by taking part in consultancy projects with employers while studying on the course.
The course gives you a strong foundation in quality theories and proficiency in using different techniques and tools for achieving business excellence. It also develops your understanding of the theoretical concepts that underpin the approaches and their application in the real world.
You benefit from the European Foundation for Quality Management (EFQM) certification, membership of the American Society for Quality (ASQ) and on completing your masters you can apply for membership of the Chartered Quality Institute (CQI).
Opportunities for PhD research are available for those interested in a career in academia.

Semester one – postgraduate certificate

Operations and performance management
This module looks at the timely and cost-effective delivery of quality products and services. It involves studying the meaning of quality, the processes involved in producing and delivering a service or product, and how to improve and measure quality and performance.

Methods of enquiry: research and consultancy in finance
This module provides a solid foundation for research and practice at postgraduate level. It feeds into the research methods and dissertation modules. You learn about various research methodologies and their merits to identify appropriate methods related to specific research objectives. The students analyse the main research issues that need to be considered when preparing quantitative and qualitative data for analysis. You also critically examine and evaluate published research in your field, and develop the personal skills and qualities necessary to successfully take research and consultancy.

Information strategies for a global economy
This module explores how information processes can be developed and managed using proven theories and principles, informed by the experience of best practice. You examine the frameworks and models used to support organisational strategies for the formulation and implementation of inter and intra organisational information systems. The students become aware of industry-wide approaches and develop your ability to apply and evaluate appropriate techniques.

Fundamentals of quality
This module provides the students with a background and critical understanding of what is meant by the term 'quality' in an organisational setting, enabling them to understand the different aspects of quality from customer satisfaction through to its place and implications within the supply chain. It also provides an understanding of the structure of quality systems and similarities of approach taken by various excellence and quality models. The students are provided with an opportunity to critically reflect on the role of quality systems in improving the key business results of an organisation.

Semester two – postgraduate diploma

E-supply chain management
This module explores the complex relationship between technology and supply chain management, enabling you to successfully manage the supply chain within increasingly global markets. It offers the opportunity to critically appraise the core elements of internal and external e-supply chain management and explores the relationship between technology and supply chain management in order to add value and aid strategic competitiveness.

Statistical process control and six sigma
This module facilitates learning of fundamentals and methodologies of the six sigma, develops the concept of Statistical Process Control (SPC) and its applications, and will provide analysis skills on philosophical and causes of variation using real world examples.

European foundation quality management assessor
This module enables the students to develop awareness and critical understanding of the EFQM Excellence Model, to understand and acquire evaluate skills of the application of the Results, Approaches, Deployment and Assessment and Review (RADAR) system. It reviews and practically test how this approach can be introduced and applied to organisations. The student learns about different methods of self-assessment, how they can be applied and how each can support the evaluation of an organisation's strengths and areas for further development

Leadership and strategies for change
This module provides an essential and critical perspective of change and leadership theories and their influence on change management issues. The student is encouraged to develop a personal approach to leadership and change through a critical understanding of the ways in which organisations are developed and managed.

The students also gain an insight into theories of leadership and change and develop the ability to critically analyse and reflect upon how theories of leadership and change theory might inform practice. This involves you engaging with a variety of theoretical constructs by using them to interrogate practice with theory and vice versa.

Semester three – MSc

Research methods
In this module you prepare for your dissertation and gain the skills to interpret and evaluate published research. The student develops knowledge of methodological and philosophical issues in research. The student learns to design a research project, and to select, justify and implement appropriate research methods.

Dissertation
The dissertation offers you the opportunity to enhance your personal and professional development through an in-depth independent study in an area of your choice that is relevant to quality management.
