This MSc by Research provides an opportunity for students from biological subjects to begin research in life sciences.
Conserving biodiversity and avoiding the extinction of species are huge global challenges. It has never been more important for scientists to understand organisms and ecosystems, how they have evolved and are interrelated, and how they respond to the threats they face.
Evolution and Ecology seek to explore the natural world, from individuals to populations, and communities to ecosystems. Study in this area enables examination of how organisms interact with each other and their environment, and how these processes are affected by human activities. This helps us understand the planetary ecosystem and how it responds to environmental change.
As researchers in the School, students will have the opportunity to collaborate with academics working on studies and projects.

Course programme
Due to the nature of postgraduate research programmes, the majority of time is spent in independent study and research. Students will have meetings with their academic supervisor, but the frequency of these will vary depending on individual requirements, subject area, staff availability, and stage of programme.
Research Areas and Topics
Research within the School of Life Sciences is conducted within six research groups. The Animal Behaviour, Cognition and Welfare group explores the causes, functions, and evolution of animal behaviour and the impact this has on animal welfare. The Evolution and Ecology group examines population dynamics and evolutionary processes at all levels of biological organisation, while the Drug Design and Delivery group focuses on the application and efficacy of novel therapeutics, and the Molecular Basis of Disease group aims to understand disease at a molecular level in order to improve diagnosis and treatment.
