Course programme

This Module aims to build on the Introductory Qualitative and Quantitative Research Methods module to demonstrate the key approaches to researching in the broad social sciences, providing the foundation for conducting further research, whether in universities or in other settings.
Introduction to Qualitative and Quantitative Research Methods
This module aims to provide a means to ensure that basic foundational research skills and knowledge can be developed. It also provides students with the opportunity to refine and demonstrate existing research skills and develop new skills and knowledge that they may not have encountered within their undergraduate studies or professional practice. The intention is also to provide a platform to create inter-disciplinary perspectives and to be able to begin to debate and evaluate different research approaches in social science.
Preparation for Research and Research Design
This Module provides graduate students with the opportunity to examine contemporary challenges in the design and practice of social research. The focus of the module is the development of responsible, capable and reflective research practitioners.
Students are given the opportunity to examine relationships between philosophical underpinnings, research aims, ethics, theoretical positions, analytic concepts, data collection instruments, research design variations, and analysis and research evaluation processes.
The module concludes in an exercise where students apply their learning by taking informed and well supported judgements with regard to the design of their own research project.
Specialist Options
Students are asked to select 30 credits worth of Optional Modules (two 15 credit Modules or one 30 credit Module) to support their specialist interests in Social Science. Students may select any masters-level module(s) within the College dependant on permission from the relevant School. This component of the course is designed to give students the opportunity to explore their understanding and use of social research methods in a focused area of disciplinary or interdisciplinary specialisation, and their knowledge in the theoretical and empirical debates that are relevant for their academic and/or professional interests. The Specialist Options Module coordinator is available to assist students in making a selection. The coordinator will work with students to compose a tailored programme of study; although module choices from among other masters programmes cannot be guaranteed and may change from year to year.
