About this course

This inter-disciplinary course will teach you all of the major components you will need to forge a career in sports management.

The key elements of the course include sports marketing, which is crucial to the success of any sporting enterprise, and sponsorship, which today plays such a massive role in all professional sports.

You will learn about event management and how to plan, run and manage all of the resources needed to make a set-piece sporting event a success.

You will study the finance and economics of sports management. A good grasp of the numbers is essential in the business of sport, which like any other business takes a close look at the bottom line.

In addition, you’ll learn how to take a strategic approach to sports management and will learn how the sports-related policies of governments and sports governing bodies have an impact on the role. You’ll also undertake a sports management consultancy project, which will hone your research skills.

This course will set you on the path to a range of careers, enabling you to put what you’ve learnt into practice. If you already work in the field it could be a stepping stone onto something bigger and better, or it could be this qualification that gives you a foot in the door.

Some of the possible career paths you could choose include the following:

Sports development – local authorities, national associations and charities employ postgraduates to help increase participation and promote the benefits of sport.

Sports event management – think of the big showpieces like the FA Cup Final, Six nations rugby championship – or major athletics meetings or boxing matches. Companies need people with skill and expertise to ensure they run without a hitch.

Sports marketing and sponsorship – sport is big business and marketing and sponsorship deals take skill to arrange – whether in-house for a sports club or for a private sector company (sport or non-sport business).

Sport research consultancy - providing expert advice within the field of sport management to clients directly or indirectly involved in the business of sport.

Further study - PhD in Sports Studies and/or management to make a contribution to knowledge and practice in the area of sport.

Other possibilities also exist, such as managing sports facilities, such as leisure centres, or helping to manage sports clubs on the commercial side.

Minimum 2.2 Honours in Business or Sports related degree.
We would normally expect you to have Grade C in GCSE English and Maths.
