About this course

You will study the underlying principles of S&C science and the multifaceted role of the S&C practitioner. The applied and practical nature of the course will equip you with the skills required to work with athletes and clients of different ages, abilities and demographics in designing and implementing bespoke training programmes to enhance athletic performance and health and wellbeing. You will benefit from the insights of experienced S&C coaches and practitioners from related disciplines, and you will have opportunities to gain valuable applied experience and coaching qualifications alongside the course. There is an emphasis on technical coaching skills and the integration of S&C into the wider interdisciplinary performance setting.

This module examines real world application of S&C within a variety of contexts. You will gain an insight into the realities of working in the S&C field, with experienced S&C coaches and practitioners from other disciplines sharing their experiences and approaches to working in the industry. Alongside taught content, you will undertake a placement in which you will operate in an applied strength and conditioning capacity.

In this module, you will examine strategies used to assess athletes’ physical capabilities, ranging from movement competency, to strength and power diagnostics, field-based testing protocols and biomechanical analysis. You will explore technology and software solutions used in assessing, monitoring and reporting physical performance measures, examine considerations in the reliability, validity and sensitivity of performance tests, and look at how to present information to athletes and coaches in meaningful and impactful ways.

In this module students will be required to undertake an independent research project negotiated with a nominated supervisor. Students will have the experience of utilising in-depth knowledge and understanding of their specialist area whilst engaging in the research process. Students will produce either a piece of empirical research, or professionally related, applied practice depending on the area of study.

This is a practically focused module in which you will be taught training techniques and explore technical models for key resistance training exercises and field-based training methods. You will be given the opportunity to develop your own technical competencies, as well as the opportunity to develop your coaching skills in the weight room and field environments.

This module will explore the principles of designing, planning and implementing strength and conditioning programmes, examining key principles in relation to optimising sports performance through the application of periodisation and multi-disciplinary approaches to the physical preparation of athletes.


You will be assessed in a variety of ways that are relevant to the extensive range of competencies required of an S&C coach. These include practical assessment of technical coaching competencies, portfolios and applied case studies demonstrating the ability to assess athletic performance and prescribe individualised training programmes, and written coursework demonstrating reflective practice and research skills.

These fees relate to new entrants only for the academic year indicated for entry onto the course, any subsequent years study may be subject to an annual increase, usually in line with inflation.


  • You will need a good degree in a related subject (normally 2:2 or above).
  • Applications may be considered from those without an undergraduate degree (or in an unrelated discipline) provided that they can demonstrate significant professional experience in S&C or a related sector (such as personal training or military training).   • You will need to supply evidence in the personal statement on the application form that demonstrates your suitability for the MSc Strength and Conditioning and your reasons for wanting to study the course.
  • Please note those receiving an offer of a place on the course will be subsequently required to meet a Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) Check and an Occupational Health Check.

You will also need to obtain a certificate of good conduct/character and any other references from your home country, and this will be required to ensure you pass the UK police (DBS) checks that are a requirement of the course..

    Entry to this course requires a Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) Check and an Occupational Health Check.

    If you have accepted a Conditional Offer made by the University of Wolverhampton you will receive correspondence asking you to complete an enhanced Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) check. The charge for this will be a DBS fee of £40.00 and a £6.50 ID check service fee. You will also need to complete a physical activity readiness questionnaire prior to starting the course.

    Those who do not meet the entry requirements set for this course (listed above) may be offered an alternative course/s. The alternative course/s offered will also require the applicant to meet with the set entry requirements..


    This course is delivered by experienced academics and applied practitioners in the fields of sports science and strength and conditioning (S&C), including UK Strength and Conditioning Association (UKSCA) accredited coaches and tutors. Our academic staff includes leading researchers and experienced practitioners with extensive experience of supporting athletes in enhancing their sports performance.

    Our fantastic specialist sports facilities house cutting-edge technology including our human movement lab with 3D motion capture system, physiology lab with environmental chamber and our high performance S&C Suite, which is part of the British Judo World Class Performance Centre.


    Postgraduate Loan (Home Fee Status):

    You may be able to get a postgraduate student loan from Student Finance England of up to £11,750 to help pay for a Master’s degree. Applications are made through Student Finance England and more information on the regulations and eligibility criteria can be found at Masters Loans gov.uk.

    Your employer, embassy or organisation agrees to pay all or part of your tuition fees; the University will refer to them as your sponsor and will invoice them for the appropriate amount.

    We must receive notification of sponsorship in writing as soon as possible, and before enrolment, confirming that the sponsor will pay your tuition fees.


    Financial Hardship:

    Students can apply to the Dennis Turner Opportunity Fund for help with course related costs however this cannot be used for fees or to cover general living costs.
