About this course

You need a minimum of 5 GCSEs grade A* - C or above including GCSE Music at grade C or play to grade 5 standard. All styles of playing are acceptable and Rock and Pop players are most welcome if they are willing to learn traditional music notation. Students without GCSE Music at Grade C or Grade 5 practical will be auditioned.

What is this course about?
The AS/A level Music course is simple in design but comprehensive. It is intended to be stimulating and enriching for students. At both AS and A2 students experience the musical disciplines of performing (solo and/or ensemble), composing, listening and understanding.

What topics will I study?

At AS :
  • Performing Music
  • Composing
  • Developing Musical Understanding. (involves an investigation of musical styles through study of pieces in the New Anthology of Music Ed. Julia Winterson).


At A2:
  • Extended Performance
  • Composition and Technical Study
  • Further Musical Understanding. (involves listening to familiar and unfamiliar music and understanding how it works).


How will my work be assessed?

At AS :
  • Internal assessment of a five-six minute performance of music using any instrument(s) and/or voice(s);
  • Controlled conditions examination of preparation for a three minute composition and preparation of CD sleeve note;
  • Two-hour examination testing listening skills, knowledge and understanding of familiar music.


At A2
  • Internal assessment of a 12-15 minute performance of music using any instrument(s) and/or voice(s);
  • Controlled conditions examination of preparation of composition and technical study;
  • Two hour examination testing students' abilities to listen to music, familiar and unfamiliar, and understand how it works.


Frequently asked questions

Are students expected to have instrument/voice lessons outside of the course?
Yes. The College will subsidise students taking instrument lessons with a termly subsidy of £50 to be applied for retrospectively at the end of each term.

What performance work can I do through the College?
The College has a wide selection of ensemble groups, a jazz band and choir which performs at a range of events throughout the College year, including an Autumn and Spring Concert. All Music students are encouraged to participate in these events which are as much a part of the subject as they are general enrichment opportunities.

What are the lessons like?
A range of teaching and learning styles is used during the course, which has a clear focus on composition and performance as well as exploration of practitioners' works; learning being primarily delivered through practical investigation and workshop activities. You will have the opportunity to visit local and national theatres and gain the opportunity to work with practising professionals.

What skills do I need to have?
You must be willing to commit to group work and have the desire to grow as a performer and be prepared to perform in public. Due to group based work and individual study elements within the course, you must be capable of unsupervised work and display a high level of maturity.

What have I got to do to do well?
  • You need to be capable of working independently as well as part of a group/team and above all have be willing to practise regularly and balance study for both performance and composition.
  • You must respond well to feedback and encouragement to develop your composition and performance skills and be willing to explore your skills within the context of the syllabus.
