The course is for you if you have strong performance skills and an interest in composition and the analysis of a wide range of music. For this specification, learners must choose either Option A in both Components 1 and 2 or Option B in both Components 1 and 2. All learners must study Component 3

Course programme
Non-exam assessment: externally assessed by a visiting examiner.
Option A: 10-12 minutes: 35% of qualification.
Minimum of 3 pieces from 2 areas of study with one as soloist and or, ensemble.
Option B: 6-8 minutes: 25% of qualification.
Minimum of two pieces either as soloist, ensemble or combination. One piece must reflect the musical characteristics of one area of study.
Non-exam assessment: externally assessed by WJEC.
Option A: 4-6 minutes: 25% of qualification
Two compositions, one which reflects the Western Classical Tradition in response to a set brief. The second composition is a free composition.
Option B: 8-10 minutes: 35% of qualification
Three compositions, one which reflects the Western Classical Tradition in response to a set brief. The second composition must reflect one different area of study (i.e. not the Western Classical Tradition) while the third composition is a free composition
Written examination: 2 hours 15 minutes: 40% of qualification
