About this course

The Music Performance MMus includes three dedicated performance modules, each with a distinctive focus - Aesthetics of Musical Performance; Performance Studies; and Psychology of Musical Learning, Communication and Expression.
The curriculum is enriched by the eclectic view we take of musical styles and genres at Kingston, exploiting the diversity of a repertoire encompassing western classical music, popular and world musics.
You have the opportunity to develop and enhance your performance skills through one-to-one tuition, masterclasses, recitals and ensemble participation.
You will also enhance your research and project development skills by undertaking a related study and presenting it in the form of a paper. Core modules teaching research, project planning and development skills will support your preparation of the paper.
You can further tailor the course to your own interests by choosing an optional module from a wide range of music topics and/or closely related subjects.
You undertake a variety of forms of assessment, including a major public performance recital; a portfolio of presentational and promotional materials; essays, critiques and critical reviews; and a position paper, presentations and research paper.
We offer a part-time option to enable you to complete your MMus alongside other commitments

A high proportion of Music Performance MMus students obtain employment on graduation - either in the music profession itself, in related areas or in teaching - or enrol for further study (eg PGCE, MPhil or PhD). Many of our graduates are international students and have taken up posts across the world, in locations such as Cyprus and Kuwait. For those students who are already in employment and undertake the course part-time, the award may accelerate promotion and open up new opportunities.

The nature of the Music Performance MMus at Kingston - combining compositional and practical skills, alongside theoretical knowledge - equips graduates for a broad range of careers, including:

performing professionally;
teaching in school;
higher education;
instrumental teaching;
outreach work; and
educational workshops.

A good honours degree in music from either the UK or abroad (this may be in a specialist field such as popular music, performance or music technology). Typical entry qualifications are an honours degree in music at 2.2 or above (2.1 preferred).
We will ask applicants to submit a CD or DVD of two contrasting performances, and may ask for the submission of relevant written work.
