What else do I need to know?

Timetable and Attendance:
The course is approximately three full days and your attendance is paramount for the effective completion of work, especially in relation to band work. Your attendance and commitment should not fall below the level expected of a fully motivated professional. Internal college candidates applying to the course should have a minimum of 90% attendance on their current course.

Overview:
The course is intended to give you an insight into the world of the working musician and requires dedication and commitment. Live solo and band performances constitute a vast amount of assessed work and necessitate high attendance and teamwork skills. In addition the course will teach you how to make a living as a freelance musician, furnishing you with guidance and information on how the music industry, and wider creative industry works.

There is a high emphasis on the developmental journey of the professional throughout this course. Peer and Self-Assessment is an important tool in this course and you will be undertaking a vast amount of portfolio building. As such, you will be responsible for building recorded evidence (either audio, visual or written) which shows an ongoing development and improvement of skills and techniques.

The UAL Extended Diploma is not an open jam session and will not make you instantly famous, however, the course will challenge you to stretch your understanding and practical application of various styles as well as assist you in developing into an all rounded professional practical musician. The course has a balanced approach to
practical and theoretical work, equivalent to A Level (level 3) standard.

Students of the UAL Extended Diploma are required to actively participate in performances at live public events, often out of the usual college hours and would obviously then be expected to attend college the following morning; therefore we are looking for enthusiastic and devoted musicians who are serious about developing their skills and approach to a professional career in music.

English and Maths

English and maths qualifications are vitally important for future employers and universities, so the government has made it a priority for students to improve these skills.

Entry Level / Level 1 and Level 2: We’re here to help you on your journey, so if you do not achieve grade A*-C in GCSE English and/or maths, then you will study English and/or maths as part of your college course.

Students who achieve a D grade will be placed on the relevant GCSE programme, while students who achieve an E or below will be assessed to ensure they are placed on the right study programme for their ability.

Level 3 programmes: You will need to meet the course entry requirements specified on the course information above. For the majority of our Level 3 courses, students will need grade A*-C in GCSE English and/or maths. If this is not specified in the course entry requirement, then you may be able to study English and/or maths as part of your college course.

What can I do after this course?

This qualification enables you the opportunity to prepare yourself for a place in the music/wider creative industry or for
entry to a degree or HND course at a variety of Universities or Music Specialist institutions.
