Course programme

In the first year, you will be introduced to sequencing and recording techniques, using Apple¿s Logic Pro digital audio workstation. You will use a high-quality analogue mixing desk in our studio to produce a live multi-track recording. Two contrasting arrangements are also required: a cover of an original piece, to sound as close to the original as possible, and a creative remix in a different style. Your listening skills, musical and technical knowledge will all be tested in the coursework as well as in an external examination.

In the second year, you will create a sequenced arrangement that will also include the use of audio elements such as samples, loops and live vocals. Your studio techniques will be further developed on a different song for which a high-quality multi-track recording will be required. Finally, a composition to a set brief will allow you to experiment with musical styles and genres of your choice and create an original piece that makes imaginative use of all the skills you have developed.

Musical understanding and technical awareness are also tested in an examination, which requires students to complete a mix of an unfinished track, answer questions on music and studio techniques and write a short essay on an aspect of technological history and practice.
