What qualifications will I get?

BTEC Extended Diploma

How will I be assessed?

All non A Level qualifications including BTECs will now have some part of the course assessed externally (up to a maximum of 40% of the units). This still means that the majority of a BTEC course is assessed as normal as a student progresses through the two years by the teachers at the College through the coursework but there will be some units that have external assessments. The external assessments can take many forms: some might be practical projects such as responding to a particular brief or working on a project in controlled conditions, as well as traditional written or online examinations. Examples of all of the different types of assessment will be created in time to allow all students to practice and prepare for the real thing.

What are the entry requirements?

Minimum qualifications: Full level 2

Minimum of four GCSE passes at grade C or above to include English, Maths. Alternatively a BTEC Level 2 qualification in a related subject at Merit or above is acceptable.
Students will be required to take functional skills in English and Maths in their first year of study should they not have GCSE at the required grade. The level of functional skills will be decided at initial assessment.
Applicants will be invited to attend an interview at which a portfolio of work will be reviewed

It would be advantageous/desirable for the prospective student to have some prior musical experience, e.g. ability to play an instrument or sing. This is not an absolute requirement as other relevant technical abilities and experience will be taken in to consideration at interview.

What else do I need to know?

The course is intended to give you a taste of what it is like in the real world of music and music/sound technology, wherever possible. This means that in addition to timetabled classes you will be required to perform recording sessions alone and in small groups, and set up and sound-check for musicians and bands at live events, most of which will occur outside of normal daytime working hours. This is the work of a sound engineer, both live and studio-based, a challenging job in a very challenging and demanding profession, so we are looking for commitment. If you're ready, welcome to the world of sound.Attendance Your attendance and commitment should not fall below the level expected of a fully-motivated professional. English and Maths

English and maths qualifications are vitally important for future employers and universities, so the government has made it a priority for students to improve these skills.

Entry Level / Level 1 and Level 2: We’re here to help you on your journey, so if you do not achieve grade A*-C in GCSE English and/or maths, then you will study English and/or maths as part of your college course.

Students who achieve a D grade will be placed on the relevant GCSE programme, while students who achieve an E or below will be assessed to ensure they are placed on the right study programme for their ability.

Level 3 programmes: You will need to meet the course entry requirements specified on the course information above. For the majority of our Level 3 courses, students will need grade A*-C in GCSE English and/or maths. If this is not specified in the course entry requirement, then you may be able to study English and/or maths as part of your college course.

What can I do after this course?

This qualification enables you the opportunity to prepare yourself for a place in the music industry or for entry to a degree or HND course.
