About this course

There are many important opportunities in higher education with a wide range of courses available and many career possibilities for those proficient in handling music technology.
Within the music industry itself students may embark upon a wide variety of professions, from the more obvious opportunities as sound engineer or record producer to the many related roles in the media industry as a whole.

The ability to play an instrument is essential and an understanding of traditional staff notation (not guitar tablature) is strongly recommended.
GCSE Music is not essential, but a general knowledge of music is an advantage.

Course programme

Each of the AS and A2 years is delivered over 4.5 hours per week, typically split into four individual lectures (those opting to fastrack will study eight).

Teaching is generally linear as the complexity of each project and production seeks to build on the basis of the previous task, and as such it is expected that students will achieve a wide range of studio production techniques.

Assessment is assignment based for all internal work but final coursework portfolios are assessed by an external examination team.

Both the AS and A2 years are completed with an external examination. Listening at AS and Production at A2.

From September 2017, the following A Levels (Electronics, Music Technology, Dance, Classics, Ancient History and Geology) have not been reformed by Qualifications Wales. This means they will only be offered by English examination bodies which have focused on linear delivery – with all exams and practical assessments taking place at the end of year two.

The AS Level is still available, but no module marks from any external assessment will be carried forward into year two and is a totally separate stand-alone qualification. If you are enrolling for a linear A Level, you must understand the level of commitment required for the two year course. There is a likely increase of examination time and requirements, and all external assessment will take place at the end of the two years.
