Entry qualifications

Although there are no formal qualifications required, a good standard of written English is required. Applicants will also be assessed at interview.

Information about the course

This course prepares practising Dental Nurses for entry to the qualifying examination for the National Certificate. Candidates also complete a record of experience which is a record of work practice verfied by a supervisor in the work setting as part of the training.

Course content

The syllabus is comprehensive and covers such topics as:

· Duties and role of the Dental Nurse
· Reception, clerical and administrative duties
· Anatomy and physiology
· Pathology and Microbiology
· Causes and prevention of dental disease
· Sterilisation
· Instruments and equipment
· Dental drugs and materials
· Restorative dentistry
· Minor dental surgery
· Orthodontics
· Anaesthesia
· Emergencies
· Dental radiography
· Health and safety at work

plus a Record of Experience demonstrating practical knowledge and experience.

Additionality

When will I receive my results?

Results will be forwarded on as soon as they are received at the college. Please note that certificates, where awarded, can take up to 4 months to be received at the college before forwarding on to learners.

Assessment

The examination consists of a written paper, spotter test, practical test and oral test. A textbook will be recommended.

Applicants will also be expected to complete the National Certificate Record of Experience. This is a portfolio of supported evidence, collected by the candidate, with the verification of the employer. Employers will be asked to complete and sign documentation to assist with the collection of this evidence and will need to be prepared to make the commitment to support their employee in this way.

On gaining the qualification there are opportunities for progression as follows:-

· Course in Radiography, Sedation, Special Needs, General Anaesthetics, Orthodontics
· Practice Management.
· N/SVQs in Training and Development
· Hygienist and/or Therapy Training
