The navigator is the one who practices navigation, in particular, the one who calculates and supervises navigation, checking that it complies with the driving rules in force. The navigator's main task is to complete the "radar" (or Road book), in the study and reconnaissance phase of the route and to communicate the results to the pilot, during the course of the race. Furthermore, he must make sure of the "legal" aspect of the race, checking compliance with the transfer times assigned from one special stage to another, making the stamps at the checkpoints and verifying compliance with the regulations. The indications obtained from the radar and verbally provided by the navigator via intercom, they are essential to anticipate the subsequent difficulties or pitfalls of the route to the driver and to "guide" him in the stretches with little or no visibility. The combined speed and precision with which the data must be provided in the special tests entail the adoption of a special technical code with which every detail of the route is scanned during the speed test, annotations and codes agreed with the pilot, with whom there is generally also a strong personal understanding. The difficulty of achieving this high degree of harmony is the main reason that often determines the continued association in sporting activity for the pilot-navigator couples.
