ENTRY REQUIREMENTS:
You will be over 16, and we normally require 4 GCSEs at Grade D to include English Language, or Pass grade in a relevant subject at Foundation, GNVQ or NVQ Level 1. Current College learners are required to have successfully completed the Key/Functional Skill attached to their course.
If you are over 21, but do not have the level of qualifications set out above, we would still welcome an application from you. You will need to demonstrate that you are capable of benefiting from the course and be able to cope with the demands of a fulltime level 2 course.
PREPARATION FOR INTERVIEW:
You will be required to bring with you to interview the following documents. This is so we can support and guide you with your application.
Travel and Tourism together make up the world's largest industry and this country's fastest growing industry, with a wide variety of types and levels of jobs available. If you feel that you would like to work in this industry, but are not sure what area will suit you, then this is the course for you.
WHAT CAN THE COURSE LEAD TO?
This qualification is ideal for learners currently in education at school or at an FE college. It will appeal to those learners who are seeking to start a career in travel and tourism and those who may wish to specialise in a particular area, such as airline operations* or tour management. Learners who wish progress to a higher level course will be able to enrol on to our Level 3 BTEC National Diploma in Travel and Tourism with the successful completion of additional coursework.
*The Airline Operations Unit is mapped to an additional NCFE Level 2 Certificate for Airline Cabin Crew qualification. WHAT QUALIFICATIONS WILL I GET?
To be awarded the NCFE Level 2 Certificate in Travel and Tourism you are required to successfully complete a portfolio consisting of the following units:
The travel and tourism industry This unit learners will be introduces you to different types of tourism and the organisations that support it. You will develop an understanding of the industry and gain a foundation for other units within the qualification.
Customer service in travel and tourism This unit considers the importance of a customer-focussed approach for the travel and tourism industry, as well as the needs of different types of customer.
Employment opportunities in travel and tourism In this unit you will investigate employment opportunities within the travel and tourism industry that are appropriate to their level of study. You will be encouraged to engage with the recruitment process for a job by participating in practical activities such as interviews.
Currency, foreign exchange, travel documentation and the law This unit will explore currency and the operation of a foreign exchange bureau. You will investigate passport, visa and health requirements and will develop students' understanding of how the legislation and regulations protect the customer.
Sales and promotion in travel and tourism This unit is about sales and promotional aspects of travel and tourism and, in particular, the use and design of promotional materials. You will develop practical skills to sell products to customers.
UK Destinations You will investigate the UK as a destination and consider how it appeals to incoming tourists. You will have the opportunity to produce an itinerary for a tour, linking this to the role of an incoming tour operator.
European and Middle Eastern destinationsThis unit looks at the main popular destinations in Europe and the Middle East. You will investigate the main features of those European and Middle Eastern destinations and the factors that affect their popularity.
Holidays in the Far East, Australia and New Zealand Through a study of Far Eastern, Australian and New Zealand destinations, learners will gain knowledge of the culture of different types of destination and how this is used to appeal to different types of customer.
Airline operations This unit is mapped to the additional NCFE Level 2 Certificate for Airline Cabin Crew qualification. Students will be familiarised with the role and duties of air cabin crew and airport terminology. You will also develop your understanding of health, safety and security risks related to the airline industry.
Resort representatives This unit introduces you to the role of the resort representative. Through role play, you will develop your skills in carrying out activities such as a welcome meeting and selling excursions. The unit also focuses on the problems that a resort representative may encounter and the Health and Safety issues they must be aware of.
HOW WILL I LEARN?
All course activities will be as work related as possible, using a student centred approach including role play, practical tasks and case studies where appropriate as well as lecture and task based learning. Your studies will be supported by an experienced team of tutors and you will have regular tutorials. As this course is work related, we expect the same standards of attendance, punctuality and commitment as an employer would.
ENRICHMENT ACTIVITIES
We are very proud of the enrichment activities that travel and tourism students participate in. For the academic year of 2009-2010, the students will have visited various Island attractions, London, Portsmouth and the Virgin Training Base in Crawley. Trips for 2010-2011 TBA.
WORK EXPERIENCE
Travel and Tourism students have a high profile at the college, as they help to host the High School taster days by acting as tour guides. Students have on occasion, acted as Cabin Crew looking after Middle School passengers in our mock-up aircraft cabin room. As preparation for working in the travel and tourism industry, students are required to wear a uniform and maintain a smart and professional appearance at all times, whilst at College.
