Join our collaboratively designed course and you will exercise your talents as you get to grips with partnerships dealing with such issues as litter, crime, antisocial-behaviour, poor health and lack of work opportunities. We will teach you to be effective in bringing residents, community groups and providers together to make better neighbourhoods.

Progression:
Successful students can progress onto the Public Services Foundation Degree at the College.

Entry Requirements:
In our experience in order to be successful on this level of course you will need one of the following:

· equivalent qualifications or relevant work experience.

· 60-120 UCAS tariff points

· a BTEC national award in a related subject

· an NVQ Level 3 in a related subject

· or a willingness to study at university level and develop personal skills.

Duration: Two years

Business Benefits:
The course is collaboratively designed to meet local needs and current Government initiatives regarding community relations, crime reduction and citizenship.

The course consists of six 20 credit modules at higher education level 1 (this is equivalent to the level of the first year of an honours degree).

Employers involved in the design of the course include:
• Devon and Cornwall Constabulary
• Devon and Somerset Fire and Rescue Services
• Plymouth City Council housing department
• Local community groups such as the Devonport Regeneration Group.

Course Overview
What does the course involve?:

The course includes:
• partnerships in practice - examining the role of statutory, non-statutory and voluntary agencies who work in partnership with the public at a local level to improve community safety
• community relations - looking at the concept of the community and the skills needed to communicate with and understand the needs of a diverse range of people

· communication and diversity at work

· performance management

· crime and society.

You will learn the communication skills needed to co-ordinate and manage people, and guide their efforts towards common goals and objectives. Development of personal development planning is also taught on this course.

One day per week

Are there any exams?:
The workshops will include lectures, seminars and guest speakers. You will be expected to play an active part in all sessions, for example student presentations will be an important aspect of assessment. Discussion, debate and lively interaction with fellow students will be encouraged and will form the ethos for the course thus encouraging collaboration and group work. Assessment and content have been carefully thought through to provide a range of interactive, collaborative and independent activities.
