Course Description
Neuroscience is the study of the nervous system, including the brain, spinal cord, and networks of nerve cells, or neurons, that travel throughout the body. Although the field of neuroscience is relatively new, it is growing and expanding at a very rapid rate.
This is an exciting, interactive course with many hands-on activities to explore the brain and the nervous system.
Students will learn about how our brain functions in normal health as well as disease. Students will learn the anatomy and physiology of many neurological disorders (for example Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s) and mental health disorders (for example bipolar disorder and schizophrenia). Students will have the opportunity to handle human brain tissue donated to the school of medicine for educational purposes.
Additional hands-on activities include learning how to read an MRI of the brain and how to explore “major highways” in the brain through a digital computer modeling technique called “white matter tractography”. Students will have the opportunity to digitally analyze, trace and 3D print a novel neuron recently discovered by the course instructors in a neuroscience research lab at Brown University. In addition, students practice clinical role-playing activities to test the health of cranial nerves.
Many of these activities are exclusively offered at the medical school or graduate school level, so this is a unique opportunity to engage these modern techniques as a high school student. Students who complete the course will leave with a strong foundation in neuroscience that will be valuable to any future goal in biomedical research, medical school, or other health-related career.
The course it taught by a team of two dedicated and enthusiastic professors who have been teaching this course at Summer@Brown for almost 10 years, and received the Archambault award for teaching excellence at Brown University Continuing Education for this course in 2012.
Prerequisites: Completion of a high school biology course is required and it is highly recommended that students have also taken chemistry.
