Neurosurgery is the branch of medicine that deals with the surgical treatment of problems involving the brain, spine, peripheral nerves and arteries in the neck. The neurosurgeon is a doctor who specializes in the diagnosis and surgical treatment of problems affecting the central nervous system and the peripheral nervous system. There are different types of surgical approaches carried out by the neurosurgeon and concern the following areas: neuroplastic pathologies, vascular pathology, spinal column pathology, pathologies affecting the nerves. Typically, the patient is referred for a neurosurgical visit by other doctors to determine if the neurological problem requires surgery. The neurosurgical visit is useful in assessing the presence and extent of pathologies of the central and peripheral nervous system or disorders affecting the spine, in order to identify the most effective treatment and the possible use of surgery. The visit, in addition to an accurate diagnosis, in the provision of an intervention allows the planning of the times and methods of the intervention. The neurosurgical visit allows to acquire information and prepare specific treatments for the patient candidate for surgical interventions involving the central and peripheral nervous system or the spine, with particular attention to the compression of the spinal nerves for lumbar and cervical disc hernias, congenital and acquired stenosis spinal canal, degenerative or post-traumatic instability of the spine, medullary vertebro tumors and malformative syndromes, entrapment syndromes and tumors of the peripheral nerves, neuromas. Stabilization of the vertebrae is one of the most frequent interventions related to spinal neurosurgery.
