Studio recording techniques (microphone techniques, working with recording consoles, outboard gear, etc.)

Overview of Term 1

In your first term, you will explore MIDI language as it is used for creating and arranging music (along with learning how to use the related software programs); the fundamentals of music theory and how to improve critical listening; how to critically listen to and analyze the elements of sound (e.g. spectrum, timbre, dynamics, etc.); as well as how to analyze the acoustics of a room and properly set up a recording studio.

Overview of Term 2

Your second term will be dedicated to audio post-production techniques to mix audio tracks, sound effects, music and dialogue in timed synchronization with video; the advanced functionalities of Digital Audio Workstations (DAWs) such as Pro Tools; how to record vocals and various types of instruments in a professional recording studio; as well as how to professionally record audio for film and television applications.

Overview of Term 3

Your final term will be focused on the structure and inner workings of the music and audio industries (e.g. key players, current trends, how to effectively advance their career within it, etc.); how to mix multitrack recordings (i.e., combine multitrack recordings and add effects to create a final stereo or surround sound product); how to master a track (i.e., balance the sonic elements of a stereo or surround mix and optimize them for playback across all systems and formats); as well as how to effectively maintain and perform basic repairs on commonly-used audio equipment.
