Overview: The aim of this programme is to prepare safe and effective practitioners, who are competent to prescribe within a legal and ethical context. This programme provides students with high-quality teaching that is informed by current research and scholarship. Students are mentored by a designated medical practitioner for the duration of the programme.

About this course

Normally at least a 2.2 Honours degree in Nursing, Midwifery or Specialist Community Public Health Nursing. Candidates who hold a recognised qualification, approved by the University as being a suitable alternative to a primary degree, may be considered for entry onto the programme. Course programme

Course Details

The Postgraduate Certificate comprises three compulsory modules.

All students must undertake two modules:

  1. Pharmacotherapeutics for Prescribing
  2. Prescribing in Practice

Students who have not completed a Health Assessment module previously must also take Health Assessment (NMP7002).

Students may claim an exemption from the Health Assessment module, in which case they will be awarded a professional qualification only and not an academic award.

Students are also required to complete a clinical competency workbook.

Assessment & Feedback

In addition to examinations and written assignments, students are also required to complete a clinical competency workbook.

Nurses who prescribe are highly skilled in their profession. They must be able to demonstrate that they have sufficient assessment and diagnostic skills in the specialist area they will prescribe in.
