Non-Medical Prescribing provides an exciting and challenging opportunity for Nurses, Midwives, Pharmacists and relevant Allied Health Professionals to expand their roles to meet the needs of their patients and service to improve access to appropriate medication.

This module is designed to provide the practitioner with the knowledge and skills to prescribe safely and appropriately within their area of practice and current non-medical prescribing legislation.

The Faculty of Health and Social Care's CPD module HEA3197 The Principles of Pharmacology is a good module to study as preparation for this Non-Medical Prescribing module.

About this course

Provide opportunities for the practitioner to enhance existing knowledge and skills relating to non-medical prescribing;
Enable the practitioner to appraise the relevant sources of information advice and support available and apply them to make appropriate decisions in prescribing practice;
Examine from a critical perspective issues of professional accountability and responsibility as they relate to non-medical prescribing and work appropriately within this framework;
Utilise reflective and analytical skills to improve and develop prescribing practice.

The module is designed to meet the needs of Nurses, Pharmacists and eligible AHPs and their employers. Before commencing the module Nurses require a minimum of 3 years' post-registration clinical experience, including one year preceding application in the clinical field in which they intend to prescribe. Pharmacists a minimum of two years' appropriate patient orientated experience practising in a hospital, community or primary care setting following their pre-registration year after graduation and AHPs a minimum of 3 years' relevant post qualification experience.

This module can be studied on a standalone basis.

It is an optional module for the following programmes:

  • BSc (Hons) Clinical and Professional Practice

  • BSc (Hons) Clinical and Professional Midwifery Practice

National guidelines/directions; assessment and consultation in safe and appropriate prescribing; pharmacology including pharmacodynamics and pharmacokinetics, patient adherance and drug responses; professional accountability; record keeping; independent and supplementary prescribing; legal, policy and ethical aspects; risk assessment and risk management; reflective practice.

How will I be assessed?

To achieve the professional prescribing qualification and obtain 45 credits at level 6 students must pass both theoretical and practical assessment components of the module and submit a portfolio of evidence.

Assessment includes:

  • 1.5 hour unseen multiple choice & short answer examination - including calculations;
  • 15 minute OSCE Examination including prescription writing;
  • 3,000 word prescribing case study submitted as part of the reflective portfolio;
  • Practice Assessment: Development and achievement of identified skills to a required level; assessed by way of continuous and collaborative approach involving the practitioner and their medical mentor;
  • A portfolio - This will be submitted as evidence of the development of prescribing practice, achievement of learning outcomes and completion of hours of learning.
