The course focuses on topics and vocabulary dealing with studies and student life as well as texts relating to Norwegian culture and current events in Norwegian society.
Key parts of Norwegian morphology, syntax, and pronunciation will be covered.
Discussion and written assignments about course topics are important aspects of the program. Students may also make a short presentation of a topic of their own choosing.

Course programme
After successfully completing this course, students will have:
Knowledge
- Students will gain an understanding of normal Norwegian speech and conversations about general topics and topics related to studies and student life.
- Students will be able to discuss and converse in Norwegian about the same topics, using vocabulary learned during the course and with good pronunciation.
- They will be able to read authentic Norwegian texts at a normal level of difficulty and express themselves in writing about topics covered by the course.
- Students will learn the key parts of Norwegian morphology and syntax.
- Students should have acquired an active vocabulary of ca.2000 words and an even greater passive vocabulary.
- They should be able to recognize words and phrases that they have seen or heard before, and partly understand the meaning of a word from their knowledge of Norwegian morphology.
The course concludes with an examination that includes an oral and a written part in Norwegian bokmål.
The oral part of the exam lasts 15 minutes and consists of a conversation between examiner and one or two students.
The written part of exam lasts 4 hours and covers listening tests, reading and writing skills.
The written part of the exam counts for approximately 2 / 3 of the final grade, the oral part for approximately 1 / 3.
One must pass both the written and oral part of the examination in order to pass the course.
