This course will make you an efficient, proactive practitioner equipped with the knowledge and awareness required to work in the field of mental health. Studying our course also offers you the chance to register as a professional mental health nurse while you achieve your postgraduate qualification.
You’ll benefit from our School of Health Sciences’ excellent research and tuition, and your clinical decision-making and leadership skills will be greatly developed throughout the course. During your time with us, you will also be introduced to how the different things which go into care, such as psychosocial, spiritual, ethical and legal factors, affect how practice is carried out.

Mental health issues can strike anyone of any age, from any background. We’ll teach you the skills you need to meet this challenge and help patients improve their lives.
Our PGDip Nursing Studies (Mental Health Nursing) will extend your existing knowledge into the field of mental health. You’ll benefit from the support and inspiration of our expert staff, who have many years of hands-on practical experience.
If you have an undergraduate or higher degree in a relevant subject and or experience of working in a healthcare environment, then this course could be for you.
To study this course, you will need to demonstrate that you have worked for a minimum of 700 hours within a paid healthcare role. This experience must be gained within a year of starting the course. Crucially, you must also have a passion for nursing and the drive to complete the course within two years.
A minimum of a 2:2 in a relevant UK honours degree, or a recognised equivalent international qualification.
GSCE English, Science and Maths at grade C or above.
Applicants are also required to have at least 16 weeks of paid work experience in a healthcare role. This must have been obtained within 1 year of starting the course.
All of our offers will be made subject to a health screening and DBS checks. Occupational health services are provided by The Robens Centre on behalf of the University of Surrey.
