Distance Learning

WHO IS THE COURSE FOR?
This course focuses on the task of managing a care service and is mandatory for managers of care homes and community care agencies.

WHAT WILL I LEARN?
You will study the mandatory units and the most frequently used optional units. In order to achieve your Leadership and Management Award you will need to complete a total of eight units; four of these are mandatory and four you can choose, depending on the kind of tasks you do in the workplace. The mandatory units comprise:
  • Manage and develop yourself and your workforce within care services
  • Lead and manage provision of care services that respect, protect and promote the rights and responsibilities of people
  • Develop and maintain systems, procedures and practice of care services to manage risks and comply with health and safety requirements
  • Lead and manage effective communication that promotes positive outcomes for people within care services.
Most units are assessed by observation of your work in the care setting and evidence of your knowledge and understanding of care practice.

HOW WILL I LEARN?
You will attend day workshops once a month to receive the unit outline and underpinning knowledge. This is a level 4 programme of study and you will be expected to undertake some research into the theories of management

independently. You will work through the support materials and complete activities and assessments for each unit. Your Assessor will also observe you

Carrying out tasks during your normal working hours in order that you meet the requirements of each unit. All your work will be collected in a portfolio of evidence.

It is important to set yourself achievable targets so that you work steadily through the award.

ASSESSMENT

You will be observed in the workplace on a minimum of three occasions so that you can show your competence at work. You will have a portfolio of evidence which includes records of your observations, activities and supporting material.

COMPLETION DATE

You will be enrolled with the college for one year and it is expected that you will complete the course within that time.
