STUDENT PROFILE

This programme is designed for people who wish to gain an understanding of principles and practice of Drugs awareness. It is particularly useful for people working on a voluntary or professional basis in counselling roles and for anyone seeking to gain a better understanding of drug use and abuse. No prior knowledge is required.

COURSE OUTLINE

The course consists of the modules listed below:

1: Introduction to drug use and misuse

* History of drug use
* drug term
* differences between depressants, stimulants, hallucinogens and tranquillisers
* potential effects that drugs have on individuals
* understanding of the law in relation to drugs
* effects of drugs in the work place
* statistics relating to drug us

2: Dealing with other substances

* Compare the differences between different types of volatile substances
* understand the potential effects that volatile substances can have on individuals

3: Levels of drug use, risks, and harm reduction

* Understand the different levels of drug dependency
* stages of changing behaviour
* methods of harm reduction, including experimental, recreation, dependency, the cycle of change, harm reduction

4: Types of treatment interventions available

* Understand what types of treatment interventions are available
* identify national contacts which provide advice and information

DURATION

Students may study over any timescale of up to one year. To complete the course will take in the region of 60 hours of study.

ASSESSMENT

This course is assessed through a series of tutor marked assignments plus a final multi-choice end-test. No attendance at an exams centre is required.

ACCREDITATION

The course is accredited at level 2 by OCNW, a leading awarding body recognised by the UK Qualifications and Curriculum Authority.
