Entry requirements & how to apply
Minimum requirements   BDS or equivalent and registration with the UK General Dental Council (GDC). Currently working in general dental practice in the UK.

 Specific employment requirement   As access to patients is required, postgraduate students must have access to a clinical environment to allow practice of clinical skills developed on the course. Special consideration may be given to new graduates who are unfortunate not to secure employment wishing to develop their clinical skills further. In such cases, they will need to secure honorary contracts for patient treatment in sessions out with the course.

As we are seeking to identify your suitability for this clinical environment, we expect our interviewees to adopt the dress code required of clinical dental students at King's College London. Further information will be given should you choose to apply. Entry to the programme is strictly dependent upon occupational health clearance that you are able to conduct exposure prone procedures (EPPs) before you start clinical work. This will assess your hepatitis B surface antigen and hepatitis C antibody status, HIV and TB status following the completion of a health questionnaire and a further health check before or at enrolment.

Course programme

Course detail Description

The course combines seminars, hands-on training and direct clinical contact with patients, alongside self-guided learning. Course participants will study the applied science of operative dentistry and acquire clinical and
practical skills in operative dentistry. This training will be delivered at the Denmark Hill Campus where you will attend for approximately 44 contact days over the two years.

It is specifically designed for dentists already working in dental practice using patients from both their practice and the hospital to develop a reflective log of treatment which will form a major part of the course assessment.

Taught and led by Aws Alani, the following consultants, specialists or highly skilled practitioners will also contribute to the programme: Peter Briggs, Gareth Calvert, Ravi Chauhan, Rajesh Dubal, Rowland Gardener, Vinit Gohil, Zoe Harrington, Sarra Jawad, Irene Kaimakamis, Jagdip Kalsi, Sneha Kubal, Mark Packer, Mahul Patel, Tony Perkins, Tif Qureshi, Arijit Ray-Chaudhuri, Lakshmi Rasaratnum, Lloyd Searson, Soureya Seeta and Guy Stephens.

The course offers a breadth of expertise, covering topics such as restorative treatment planning, anterior and posterior restorations, a variety of different crown preparation techniques, resin-bonded bridges, occlusion, management of tooth surface loss, clinical photography, dento-legal issues, endodontics and restoration of the non-vital tooth, implant maintenance, bleaching, removable prosthodontics provision and a variety of other operative dentistry-related topics.

You will acquire the skills to critically evaluate relevant literature and to apply evidence-based practice to operative dentistry. The clinical sessions will enable you to transfer your knowledge, understanding, intellectual and practical skills to improve and enhance your practice.

Course purpose

The programme aims to provide newly qualified dentists and experienced practitioners with a comprehensive knowledge and understanding of the scientific basis of operative dentistry. They will acquire the skills to critically evaluate relevant literature and apply evidence-based practice to operative dentistry. The clinical sessions will enable participants to translate their knowledge, understanding, intellectual and practical skills to improve and enhance their operative dentistry.

Typically, one credit equates to 10 hours of work.

We will teach you through lectures, seminars, hands-on training and supervision of patient treatment on clinic. Course material will be available through our online learning environment, King’s E-learning and Teaching Service (KEATS), where you will find information, interactive questions, assignments, bibliographic databases and reading material.

Assessment

Applied Science of Operative Dentistry (Parts 1 and 2) will be assessed by exams (50%) and by unseen cases (50%).
Clinical & Practical Skills of Operative Dentistry (Parts 1 and 2) will be assessed by two case reports (50%) and by unseen cases (50%).
