The Optometrist is the professional in possession of a degree or regional diploma who deals with the quantification and treatment of visual defects with optical-physical means and, in general, the improvement of visual functions with non-medical techniques, i.e. excluding the use of drugs and surgery. It prevents, corrects and compensates for visual defects and vision anomalies both through the prescription, supply, adaptation of glasses, contact lenses of all kinds and aids for the visually impaired, both with visual education procedures and with instrumental techniques. The optometrist, not being a doctor, directs his examiners to the ophthalmologist in case they show signs of pathologies. Optometrists are self-reliant top health specialists, who are licensed to locate, diagnose and provide treatment for diseases and disorders related to the eyes and the visual system. Optometrists were formerly known as ophthalmic opticians. Clinically, optometrists aim to provide solutions to patients with vision disorders. First, patients undergo general eye exams where the optometrist takes the patient's medical history of his or her eye problems. Following this, the eyes are checked for refractive errors and a visual acuity test is done to evaluate vision. on request, glasses or contact lenses of the calculated refractive state of the eyes are prescribed, to achieve adequate vision.
