The orthopedist is a doctor who can diagnose congenital or functional problems of the musculoskeletal system, from infections to sports injuries, fractures, joint problems, osteoporosis and bone tumors. If necessary, he can also intervene surgically, even conducting complex interventions such as those to insert hip prostheses. Orthopedics is the medical specialty that deals with the treatment of malformations and functional problems of the skeletal system and associated structures, such as muscles and ligaments. Before proceeding with surgery, the orthopedist tries, if possible, to solve the problem with less invasive approaches, such as the prescription of drugs or specific injections, rehabilitation or physiotherapy. When these treatments are no longer sufficient to control symptoms, surgery may become essential. The orthopedist has numerous skills: he has an in-depth knowledge of the anatomy and physiology of bones, cartilages, joints, ligaments, muscles and tendons; he knows how to recognize and treat pathologies affecting the musculoskeletal system (bone fractures, arthrosis, etc.); he is an expert in the prevention of suffering affecting the musculoskeletal system; etc. The modern orthopedist can ultra-specialize in some areas of his subject, such as elbow and shoulder orthopedics, hip and knee orthopedics or spine orthopedics. Today, the orthopedist has patients of all ages; in the past, however, he devoted himself exclusively to the care of children with spinal deformities or limbs; confirming what happened in the past, are the same term "orthopedic" and the term "orthopedics", which bring together the ancient Greek words "orthòs" and "pàis", which mean, respectively, "right" (or "straighten ") and" child ", and refer to the correction of bone deformities in the youngest.
