Progression and Employment:
With the international recognition of BTEC courses such as this, students can progress straight into employment. There are a wide variety of prospective careers that students can investigate, for example: Climbing Centre Instructors, Outdoor Education Centre Instructors.
Other careers where the study of Outdoor Adventure would be useful could include the emergency services and the armed services. The BTEC Diploma in Outdoor Adventure is equivalent to two GCE A Levels and offers good progression into higher education at university.

Programme Features:

  • The course offers the opportunity to study Outdoor Adventure in a wide variety of activities
  • Our unique location and close links with county providers make this specialised course very unique, utilising the local natural environmental resources along with a dedicated team of Outdoor Education facilitators
  • Students will be encouraged to develop their personal skills and be guided towards gaining further National Governing Body awards in their particular area of interest
  • Some of the activities the students can expect to be involved in are: canoeing, kayaking (flat water, river and surf), rock climbing (sport, trad and bouldering), abseiling, sailing, windsurfing, navigation and expedition work, mountain biking, gorge walking, coasteering, and orienteering
  • On successful completion of this course, students can progress into higher education, studying Outdoor Education at degree or foundation degree level
  • Learning support is available to help students with individual and group work


Programme Content:

The course comprises of 12 units, 6 mandatory/core units and 6 optional units.

Mandatory units: Principles and Practices in Outdoor Adventure, Equipment and Facilities for Outdoor and Adventurous Activities, Principles of Anatomy and Physiology, The Physiology of Fitness; Assessing Risk in Sport; Fitness Training and Programming; Leadership in Sport, Skills for Land Based Outdoor and Adventurous Activities, Skills for Water Based Outdoor and Adventurous Activities, Outdoor and Adventurous Expeditions, Alternative Pursuits Outdoor Adventurous, Impact and Sustainability in Outdoor Adventure, Environmental Education for Outdoor Adventure.

Learners will study the Advanced Welsh Baccalaureate alongside this qualification.

Additional information

Method of Assessment The assessment is course-work based. The form of assessment is varied and includes: practical assessment, written assignments, case studies, scenarios and student presentations. Assessment may include mastery tests but there are no formal written exams. Each unit is assessed and graded and an overall grade for the qualification awarded.
