About this course

Standard entry to this course requires one reference. It is desirable that you can demonstrate 90% attendance in your last place of study or work. A GCSE in both English and maths at grade 3 or above (D), plus an additional two GCSEs at grade 3 (D) or above including a technology/design-based subject.



Students previously studying with us will need to have attained a level 1 diploma in painting and decorating plus maths and English at grade 2 minimum or the equivalent Functional Skills.

Course programme

Year 1

The level 2 qualification typically comprises the following core units: health, safety and welfare in construction (this unit can be carried forward from level 1); and principles of building construction, information and communication. The following subject specialist units are also studied: preparing surfaces for decoration; applying paint systems by brush and roller to complex areas; applying standard papers to walls and ceilings; producing specialist finishes to decorative work; erecting and dismantling access equipment and working platforms; creating and applying colour. Employability skills will be developed and you will undertake external work experience as part of your study programme.

Additional information

You will be assessed by multiple choice question papers and practical assignments. Both assessments are set by City Guilds, delivered and marked by the tutor/assessor, and will be externally verified by City Guilds to make sure they are properly carried out.
