Course programme

What you will learn

Our aim at all times is to deliver a stimulating, challenging and engaging programme of study, to help you broaden and deepen your knowledge and develop the essential skills to study for a postgraduate degree.

The strategies for teaching and learning are consistent with those adopted for the provision of professional education in health care. It is recognised that participants in the programme are extending their previous professional practice education to develop their contribution to effective and efficient quality care in the practice setting.

Accordingly approaches to teaching and learning seek to utilise and build upon the participants’ current knowledge and experience as practitioners therefore, practice based learning is valued and draw upon throughout. Participants will undergo a programme, which balances exposure to subject knowledge, theoretical perspectives and professional/practical skills.

A wide variety of teaching and learning strategies will be used on this course. They include lectures, presentations, simulations delivered by tutors, seminar discussion, small group workshops, small group tutorials and one to one tutorials. In addition the use of the virtual learning environments (VLE) – will include E-learning packages via MOODLE and Blogs.

What you will study Multidisciplinary End of Life Care (20 credits at HE7) (optional module available if already studied at HE6)

The purpose of this module is to provide an overview of the strategies, concepts and principles that underpin high quality, evidence based Palliative and End of Life Care for people with life limiting conditions and those close to them. Students will build on their existing knowledge and experience, studying current national and local policy drivers, communication skills, loss grief and bereavement, complex decision-making and symptom management.

Assessing and Managing Symptoms in Palliative and End of Life Care (20 credits at HE7)

This module will enable practitioners to develop the skills, knowledge, capability and insight to support and care for individuals with complex symptoms as a result of advanced progressive disease. Students will be supported to recognise the multiple factors that influence the complexity of symptoms from an individual’s perspective. The module will also support flexibility and creativity in responding to the subjective experience of palliative and End of Life Care symptoms; promoting inter professional working and dissemination of best practice.

Leadership and Innovation in Palliative and End of Life Care (20 Credits at HE7)

This module will assist students in the development of essential leadership and management skills that are required to become more actively involved in the planning, delivery and transformation of Palliative and End of Life Care services for patients and clients.
