About this course

Students will normally have a first degree (or equivalent) in a relevant discipline and be in (or recently in) professional practice. Applicants who are in doubt as to the acceptability of their qualifications may discuss this with the Postgraduate Co-ordinator.

Course programme

Syllabus

Students complete taught courses to a total of 120 credits. These must include the core courses and a further 40 credits made up from elective courses plus a dissertation based on a study related to their area of professional practice (60 credits) OR (alternative mode) students complete the core courses (80 credits) and a larger dissertation (120 credits).

Other elective courses can be selected from other postgraduate programmes in the University such as Primary Care, Health Services and Public Health Research, Human Nutrition, International Health, and Health Economics.

Thesis: Palliative Care.

Note: At the discretion of the programme co-ordinator and with the approval of Senate, credit may be given for relevant postgraduate courses taken at other higher education institutions.

Assessment

Core courses and most electives offered by the Centre for Advanced Studies in Nursing (CASN) are assessed summatively by the submission of one/two negotiated assignments related to the content of the course. Assessment of other courses varies according to the requirements of the programmes in which they are based.

Teaching

A range of teaching methods are utilised by the centre including; lectures, seminars and discussions groups and it is anticipated that students will actively take part in the sessions.

Dedication

24-36 months, part-time.

Career opportunities: Many of the Centre's students are experienced professionals. They come from varied areas of nursing, midwifery, medical and other health care practice. Their academic work enables them to advance their practice, sometimes moving into research, promoted posts, or further academic work, whether in the UK or elsewhere. In addition to Scotland and the wider UK, CASN students have come from Malta, India, Greece, China, Germany, South Africa, Slovenia, Jordan and the USA.
